Urban Exploring: Showbags

Finally we’re getting back into tunnel weather!

Showbags is an old Adelaide tunnel… During the Second World War, the grounds above were commandeered by the army. Soldiers wanting to go AWOL for a few days use to escape the barracks, sliding down a stormwater pipe and exiting via the Showbags tunnel.

It’s not just been used for escape either! During the 80s and 90s, Showbags was used to gain free entry to the Royal Adelaide Show and The Big Day Out. Not any more though: parts have been grilled and large signs posted on the entrances “NO ACCESS TO SHOWGROUND”.

Urban Exploring: Hogwarts

Built in the early 20th Century, Hogwarts’ former purpose was baking. During its time, becoming the largest baking company in all Australia. It now sits in ruin with most pedestrians walking by without any thought to its famous history.

We took a new explorer here just the other week. “What was this place?”, he asked. It’s not surprising, considering all the company signs have been removed. Nothing inside or out bares its former name.

Hogwarts is now home to one friendly bum – a far cry from the hundreds of staff it once embraced. Pigeons see more of this building now. However, before its inevitable demise, what I can offer you is this one last tour…

Urban Exploring: Bel Air House

Bel Air house has sat decaying and forgotten for just shy of a decade. Burnt out by fire, the rooms sit exactly as they once did; books on the self, bedding fitted, utensils in cupboards,.. telephone still on the wall.

In the carport, a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air lay heartbroken. Lovingly restored by her owner, she now sits deflated and charred. Her owner nearly died while trying to save her.

When fire takes hold, man-made structures get exposed to the elements, and if left untouched, get replaced quickly by the natural order. No matter how hard we try, nature will always reassert itself.
